What could be causing my symptoms?
- Pain or discomfort when passing urine
Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, NSU (Non-specific urethritis), Herpes simplex virus (HSV)
- Discharge or irritation from the penis or bottom
Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, NSU (Non-specific urethritis)
- Cuts or sores on genital area or bottom
Herpes simplex virus, primary syphilis, Human Papilloma virus (HPV)
- Unusual vaginal discharge or irritation
Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Trichomonas Vaginalis (TV), Bacterial Vaginosis (BV), Candida (thrush)
- Bleeding during or after sex or in-between periods
Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), Human Papilloma virus (HPV)
Sometimes issues with contraception can also cause bleeding in between periods.
- Pain in your lower abdomen
Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
Also think about urinary tract infections or constipation.
- New lumps or warts
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), Herpes simplex virus (HSV), Primary Syphilis
- Rashes
On very rare occasions this could be Secondary Syphilis or Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
Remember there are lots of non STI causes of rashes too.

Not sure when to test for an infection?
If you have any of the above symptoms you should arrange an appointment or attend the walk-in service as soon as possible. If you have no symptoms, then:
- 2 weeks following sexual contact to test for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea
- 1 month following sexual contact to test for HIV
- 3 months following sexual contact to test for Syphilis or Hepatitis
